Recipe Tips and FAQs:
Can I use a different type of bread if I don’t have sourdough?
Certainly, you can use a different type of bread for your sourdough grilled cheese if you don’t have sourdough on hand. While sourdough bread pairs wonderfully with the flavors, options like ciabatta, French bread, whole-grain bread, or even a baguette can serve as substitutes based on your preference and what’s available. Just be aware that your choice of bread will impact the overall texture and flavor of your sourdough grilled cheese sandwich.
What can I substitute for fig jam if I don’t have it?
For your Brie grilled cheese, apricot or raspberry jam can serve as a sweet substitute for fig jam in this recipe.
Is there a way to reduce the saltiness of prosciutto if it’s too overpowering for my taste?
If you find the prosciutto in your brie grilled cheese too overpoweringly salty, there are a few strategies to balance the flavor. Soaking the prosciutto slices briefly in milk or water, typically for 15-30 minutes, can help draw out some of the excess salt. Be sure to pat the prosciutto dry afterward before using it in your sandwich. Blotting the prosciutto with paper towels can also remove some surface saltiness. Another option is to simply use less prosciutto to reduce the overall salt impact, allowing you to find the right balance for your taste. Keep in mind that prosciutto is naturally a salted and cured meat, so these adjustments can help tailor it to your preference while retaining its delicious flavor.
Can I customize this brie grilled cheese with additional ingredients?
Absolutely, you can customize this brie grilled cheese with additional ingredients to suit your taste and preferences. While the core components include Brie cheese, prosciutto, fig jam, roasted red peppers, and arugula on sourdough, you can get creative and add extra elements that appeal to you. Consider including ingredients like sliced apples for a touch of sweetness and crunch, caramelized onions for added depth of flavor, or a drizzle of honey to enhance the overall sweetness. Don’t hesitate to experiment and make the sandwich uniquely yours, tailoring it to your personal flavor preferences.
What’s the best way to reheat this sandwich if I have leftovers?
To preserve the texture of this Italian grilled cheese, it’s best to reheat the sandwich on a hot griddle or in a toaster oven for a few minutes.

Ingredients
- 4 slices crusty sourdough bread
- 4 oz brie cheese
- 1/4 cup fig jam
- 4-6 slices prosciutto
- 1/4 cup roasted red peppers
- arugula leaves
- 1-2 tbsp ghee or butter (I find ghee to work better since it does not burn as easily)
Instructions
- Slice the Brie cheese into thin slices. Spread fig jam evenly on one side of each slice of sourdough bread. Lay prosciutto slices on top of the fig jam on two of the bread slices. Distribute the roasted red pepper slices on top of the prosciutto. Place a handful of arugula leaves on top of the roasted red peppers. Place the Brie cheese slices on top of the arugula leaves. Close the sandwiches by placing the remaining slices of bread, fig jam side down, on top of the Brie.4 slices crusty sourdough bread, 4 oz brie cheese, 1/4 cup fig jam, 4-6 slices prosciutto, 1/4 cup roasted red peppers, arugula leaves
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add in your half your ghee or butter and allow to melt and spread across the pan. Place the sandwiches on the heated skillet or griddle. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side (adding more ghee or butter to the pan as needed) or until the bread turns golden brown and the cheese is melted.1-2 tbsp ghee or butter
- Once the sandwiches are grilled to perfection, remove them from the heat. Allow them to cool for a moment before slicing them in half straight down the middle or diagonally.
